We are working towards
attaining an Eco Centre Award at Oaklands and ask all our visitors to
participate in this with us.
Building our Willow Arch (Ysgol Dyffryn
Conwy)

Eco Centre status is
designed to make environmental awareness and action an intrinsic part of the
life and ethos of a centre for all staff and visitors.
Eco-Code
- Turn off lights when
leaving rooms
- Shut doors when
leaving a room
- Turn down heating
rather than opening window
- Leave no evidence of
your visit to activity sites
- Recycle your waste
- Don’t litter
- Take the chance to
make a difference yourself
- Turn off taps to
save water
Whilst working towards Eco
Centre status at Oaklands we have
- Built
a willow classroom
- Placed
bird boxes around the centre grounds( made by a local school)
- Re
instated two new pond areas
-
Sympathetically planted the bank area behind the house to encourage
butterflies and insects
-
Reduced lunchtime plastic waste by using shared lunch boxes instead of
plastic bags
-
Reduced the amount of waste we produce by removing cans from our tuck shop
and recycling glass, plastic and paper. We have reduced the number of
waste bins we use each week by one
- We
have started to monitor our electricity use with a view to reducing our
consumption
- Young
people are encouraged to take part in environmentally friendly actions
both on activity and at the centre. They are awarded points on how well
they do and are able to self score their actions in a Record of
Achievement booklet
- Many
of our staff are taking part in a cycle to work scheme
- The on
going refurbishments at Oaklands will reflect our efforts in this area and
make improvements at the centre
